Beginning Skateboard Class Santa Cruz Park

Saturday, November 10, 2007, 05:41 AM PST [General]

November 3, Saturday morning we held our first beginning skate class at the Santa Cruz Skate Park. This is our forth class we have taught through Parks and Rec. We had 11 kids 5-9 signed up one female adult and 9 kids on the waiting list. Most were beginners that could barely skate other's were more experienced. I want to thank all the skaters at the park for being patient with us as we let them try the small bowl and full pipe. We wanted them to feel fakies and how to weight and unweight the board. The smiles say it all. At the end we gave them award certificates, stickers, the new Strange Notes DVD and a medal. Next class is March 1. Only every six months. Thanks. I'm giving back to the future skaters of Santa Cruz. Skating has been good to me all these years.

    Slalom Skateboard World Championships

Wednesday, October 3, 2007, 06:18 AM PST [General]

Got back from worlds. I missed my flight bag check in by 10 minutes (5:20 am) so I had to fly to Miami-LA and then to San Jose to get home. It took 5 hours longer but was glad to come home on Monday. The flights were so close together she double booked me just in case I missed my flights, but I made each one just in time and picked my kids up from school. Back to reality, dinner, homework, laundry...
Thanks to the DHB crew for a great time. They put on an amazing event. Marion thanks for four days of great skating fun. I know you guys worked long hours months prior and during the event. I placed second overall against Lynn Kramer the 5x world champion which was quite an honor. I tried to give her a run for her money. She is FAST! I placed second in the hybrid and tight a third in the giant slalom. Watching young Ella was a treat. She is the future for the women's as well as Laura, Julie and Sarah. The youth needs to keep the sport moving forward. Cat and Julie did great as well. Three days of slalom racing fun. The open class group was fast as usual. It's great to see Martin, Joe and Zach blaze the hill as well as veterans like Jackman! The pro events rocked as well. Fast and clean was key.

Thanks to everyone that came up to me and gave me great words of encouragement and kudos. For the past few years I've been on the fence about retiring. As I said as long as I'm having fun I'm not going to stop. I've seen lots of change for the better, new board technology, trucks, wheels, great hills and courses. And most of all the people make it really happen the old friends and new friends. Thanks!
Big thank you to Gareth of RoeRacing and Henry Hester for getting me back into this sport after two decades. I never thought I'd slalom racing again. Bulky too for telling me about it in 2002 at ASR.

My NorCal training buds Ravitch, Drew, Norski and Bruce you were missed.

Here are some of the articles that came out in the local papers. "Safety mostly up to skaters at slalom world championships" and on Sunday "Female skaters hit the hill at slalom world championships"

Santa Cruz Skate Park Skateboard Demo

Thursday, August 23, 2007, 06:12 AM PST [General]

The skateboard demo for Shingu Japan students was a hit even with the lack of a ton of skaters. We have Sister Cities in Japan and a student delegation of around 14 kids came August 17-23 to Santa Cruz. Wednesday, August 22 9:10 - 9:30 am. I was in charge of gathering skateboarders to skate and provide a demo to show some of the talent from around the area at the Santa Cruz Skate park. They fixed the coping in the pool and they patched the street course area Friday prior to the event (Thank you Parks and Rec. And thanks to Dave Friel at NHS for giving me the heads up). Thank you Mark bringing the Sessions T-shirts, hats, and stickers, Santa Cruz for the skateboard stickers. Thanks to the Jason and his Halfpint team for their support. Perfect opportunity if you are an early riser to ride the park solo. The parks folks opened it early and doh! can you say private session.

Next stop at 9:30 am was the Fun Spot to watch the 2 Hip team and the Bike Trip riders get some Air time. Jamie Goldman rips. His dad Mike Smiley Goldman had the downhill stand up speed record for a time before John Hutson grabbed it. Both skate and are over 50!

There was swag to be had for all the skaters. Next time I'll give people a bit more time and I know school has started as well.

Never thought I'd still be skating

Friday, July 20, 2007, 06:13 AM PST [General]

Don't laugh. One day you will be middle aged. It has been an amazing ride and the past 5 years of slalom racing finds me racing on streets in the middle of cities across the US. Skating roads that are fenced off for skaters for the day is insane. Watching the up and coming racers is even better. I never thought I'd still be skating and for sure not at the speeds I have been. Riding down 1/2 mile long courses with 90+ cones was not what I had in mind in my later years. I thought for sure this would be out of my system by the time I was in my 20's. I have two kids and a job to tend to. Never mind I am closer to 50 then 40. Life is short. Enjoy and show respect to your elders!

    ;)
